We've Got Spirit, Yes We Do!

Last week was Spirit Week at Ursuline and the students' fabulous UA pride was on display all week!  Each day had a different theme and the students (and some faculty members!) dressed the part.  The themes for each day were:
Bearnice
  • Monday: Pajama Day
  • Tuesday: Princess Day
  • Wednesday: Boy Day
  • Thursday: Neon/Sparkle Day
  • Friday: Color Day
    • 7th grade: Green
    • 8th grade: White
    • Freshmen: Pink
    • Sophomores: Black
    • Juniors: Blue
    • Seniors: Red
All week, teachers cast their vote for the class they thought was most spirited each day.  The final tally is in and the 8th grade earned the most votes and the title of Most Spirited Class!  Their prize is a popsicle party and temporary custody of Bearnice, the life-size bear in a UA uniform who can often be found welcoming visitors to the lobby.  The Seniors and 7th graders were a close 2nd and 3rd.  Congratulations girls!

Here are some favorite photos from the week!  To see more Spirit Week highlights, check out the slideshow in our Media Gallery on UrsulineAcademy.net!

Observing Lent at Ursuline

Lent is a season of reflection and repentance in the Catholic Church and a time of preparation before the joy of Easter.  Here at Ursuline Academy we are observing Lent in several special ways as a community of faith.

During each week of Lent the Peer Ministers plan a prayer service for the school community with readings, prayers and songs.  Each grade also attends a special penance service at some point during the 40 days of Lent and on Wednesday, March 21, there will be a Lenten Fast Day in the Tea Room.  Rather than indulging in the snacks, sandwiches, salads and desserts that are usually offered in the Tea Room, the school community will fast as a reminder of Jesus’ 40 days of fasting in the desert.

The Ursuline faculty and staff are also taking time to pause and reflect on their own during this season of Lent.  Each Tuesday morning, faculty and staff members gather before school for a Lenten prayer service.

The entire school community came together to pray the Stations of the Cross during the third week of Lent.  The theme of the reflection at each station was “Turning Stones into Gems,” with an emphasis on the virtues of prayer, almsgiving, fasting, repentance, conversion and light.  Mrs. Keaney, Ms. Tracy and student readers led the community in prayer, complimented by reflections in song from the Choral Group.

We are very grateful to Mrs. Costa, Ms. Tracy, Mrs. Glancy and the Peer Ministers for all the work they have done during this Lenten season to plan these events!

UA Makes a Mark in Winter State Tournaments!

All four of Ursuline’s varsity winter athletic teams, as well as the Robotics Club, made appearances in their respective state tournaments this year!  Way to go Bears!

Both the Varsity Basketball team and Varsity Ice Hockey team earned berths in the MIAA State Tournament.  Both teams exited the tournament in the first round after close, hard-fought contests.  Varsity Basketball ended their season at 13-7, and the Hockey team finished with an 8-9-3 record and the title of Catholic Conference Tri-League Champions.

Three UA Hockey Bears were also named Catholic Conference All-Stars!  Senior co-captains Delia and Emily earned the honor, along with the team’s goalie, Erica ’13.  The Junior Varsity Hockey team also had a great season, with a 7-7 record.  One of the biggest highlights of the year for the hockey teams was running into Boston Bruins All-Star Tyler Seguin at the rink before one of their practices!

The Junior Varsity Basketball team put up some impressive numbers, with only one loss the entire season!  They finished with a 17-1 record.  The Jr. High Basketball team also had a great season, finishing with an 11-3 record.  One of the highlights of their season was playing at halftime of a Boston College-Holy Cross women’s game at BC’s Conte Forum!

Despite the lack of wintry weather, the Ski Team still had a great season this year!  UA Skier Stephanie represented the team at the State Alpine Championships at Mt. Wachusett, where she finished an impressive 28th in a field of 138 skiers in the slalom race!

The Indoor Track team had a historic season: this year marked the first time that runners from Ursuline Academy qualified for the New England Indoor Track & Field Championships!  The team ran away with a second place overall finish at the Division IV State Championships, led by the Champion 4 x 400 relay team.  Then it was on to the All State meet, where Amy ’15 ran a school record time of 41.72 seconds in the 300m race!

The 4 x 400 team of Maddie ‘14, Merissa ‘14, Amy ‘15 and Meghan ’13 was on fire in the post-season.  They set a school record time in their victory at the Division IV State Championships, and then proceeded to shatter that record at the All State Championships the following week with a new time of 4:03.85!  This new school record qualified the team for the New England’s, and made UA athletic history.

Congratulations to all our student-athletes on a fabulous winter season!

The Robots in Plaid, Ursuline’s Robotics Club, had a great showing in their inaugural appearance in the FIRST Tech Challenge State Tournament.  Not only did they make it all the way to the semi-finals of the competition, they also received the “Motivation Award” trophy!  This trophy is given to the team who exemplifies the most team spirit and enthusiasm as well as makes a collective effort to teach their school and surrounding community about robotics.  Congratulations to the Robots in Plaid!

Women in Leadership Symposium 2012

(L to R): Jane King '61, Mary Beth O'Leary '05,
Dr. Suellen Walsh Rother '85 and President Rosann Whiting

The alumnae speakers at Ursuline Academy’s 15th Annual Women in Leadership Symposium last Friday morning followed three divergent paths after graduating from Ursuline: one entered the world of finance, another psychology and the other, publishing.

But they all had one thing in common, aside from being proud Ursuline girls.  Each speaker emphasized the importance of seeking mentors and the advice of others, no matter what career path one takes.

The annual Women in Leadership Symposium is an opportunity for current Ursuline students to do just that: connect with and learn from alumnae.  Three impressive alumnae spoke to Grades 9-12 about their professional and personal journeys since leaving the halls of Ursuline Academy.

Jane King '61
Jane King ’61 is the president of her own investment firm, Fairfield Financial Advisers, Ltd., and has been named to the Worth Magazine list of America’s Best Financial Advisors.   Her determined spirit has brought her great success in the male-dominated business world.  King said she was often the only woman at conferences when she first started working in the investment business, but that did not deter her from forging her own path.  She urged the girls to take opportunities, and learn as much as they can along the way.

“I’m going to offer you advice, and I do so with a great deal of humility,” King said.  “In the world of working, show up every day…find and develop mentors, stay in touch and run your career choices or life choices by them, and then third, always be professional.  Dress the part…and be professional always in your manners.”

Mary Beth O'Leary '05
Mary Beth O’Leary ’05 began her speech by recalling the first time she thought about her future career options: when she was in the seventh grade at Ursuline Academy.  As a student in Mrs. Anderson’s math class, O’Leary crafted an imaginary budget for her future 22-year-old self: she would graduate from the College of the Holy Cross, move to beachfront property in Miami with her best friend and be an elementary school teacher.

“Let me tell you which of these things came true,” she said.  “I did go to the College of the Holy Cross…but if you couldn’t tell from my lack of a tan, I don’t live in Miami.  Instead, I live with my two best friends from Ursuline in Boston.”  O’Leary is a Marketing/Publicity Coordinator at Cell Press, Elsevier, the world’s second-largest publishing company, which publishes one third of the world’s scientific, technical and medical content.  O’Leary advised her fellow Ursuline girls to embrace and learn from new experiences, even if they are unanticipated.  O’Leary’s future did not follow her seventh grade plan, and her career path has also taken some unexpected turns.  As an English major in college, she never expected to be working in the science field, but she said that she has never been happier.  The secret to her success is advice that a mentor once gave her:

“She told me that often in your career it is as much about the experience as the goal.  If I let myself make the most of the new position I had and the diverse experiences it offered me, rather than fixating on what my next step was going to be, the rest would take care of itself.”

Dr. Suellen Walsh Rother '85
Dr. Suellen Walsh Rother ’85, a clinical psychologist, took the UA students on a journey through her life after Ursuline.  She even brought along a travel bag, which she packed with her advice for the future.  She weaved the advice into anecdotes from her life as an undergraduate and Ph.D student at Fordham University and then as a clinical psychologist.

When Dr. Rother first arrived at Fordham, she thought she wanted to be a pediatrician, but it was with the help of one of her mentors that she realized psychology better suited her interests and personality.  “Always remember to consult with others,” she said, as she pulled a sheet of paper out of her travel bag with those words on it.  “It is important that you have people that you trust and respect to go to and talk to.”  She also told the girls that being flexible and open to new experiences was another important item to pack in your suitcase for the journey of life.  But she ended with the most important piece of luggage: “Have fun while you’re on this amazing journey!”

The symposium ended with a Q & A and networking session, giving the students the opportunity to talk with the speakers individually and learn a bit more about their lives and careers.  Many thanks to our wonderful speakers for coming back to Ursuline for this event!  We hope you enjoyed returning to campus as much as we enjoyed having you back!

Stay tuned for a special video recap of this event in next week’s Bear Essentials!
