Observing Lent at Ursuline

Lent is a season of reflection and repentance in the Catholic Church and a time of preparation before the joy of Easter.  Here at Ursuline Academy we are observing Lent in several special ways as a community of faith.

During each week of Lent the Peer Ministers plan a prayer service for the school community with readings, prayers and songs.  Each grade also attends a special penance service at some point during the 40 days of Lent and on Wednesday, March 21, there will be a Lenten Fast Day in the Tea Room.  Rather than indulging in the snacks, sandwiches, salads and desserts that are usually offered in the Tea Room, the school community will fast as a reminder of Jesus’ 40 days of fasting in the desert.

The Ursuline faculty and staff are also taking time to pause and reflect on their own during this season of Lent.  Each Tuesday morning, faculty and staff members gather before school for a Lenten prayer service.

The entire school community came together to pray the Stations of the Cross during the third week of Lent.  The theme of the reflection at each station was “Turning Stones into Gems,” with an emphasis on the virtues of prayer, almsgiving, fasting, repentance, conversion and light.  Mrs. Keaney, Ms. Tracy and student readers led the community in prayer, complimented by reflections in song from the Choral Group.

We are very grateful to Mrs. Costa, Ms. Tracy, Mrs. Glancy and the Peer Ministers for all the work they have done during this Lenten season to plan these events!
